How to Choose the Best Backpack

Backpacks are an underrated but essential part of any prepper’s journey. Everyone needs a high quality backpack in their closet for emergencies, hiking and family trips. Having something that will comfortably carry all of your essentials will save you if you ever need to leave in a hurry. Luckily, we have a few great backpacks on our site, but we will walk you through the factors you should take into consideration when making this purchase.

The first thing to take into consideration is size. Size matters! And no, it does not need to carry everything in your house – just the essentials. A huge backpack will quickly grow uncomfortable and you will find yourself having to get rid of things to make it more bearable and comfortable for your back. This Trident backpack by Vanquest is light enough to carry, but still has plenty of space with compartments to hold everything you need. Plus, it has wide straps, which is a necessity – we will get into that in a second. For now, Look for a bag that is comfortable, lightweight and small enough to carry comfortably.

You will also want a bag with hip straps, since it distributes the weight of the backpack evenly across your body. Remember those wide shoulder straps? Those also help distribute weight more evenly and are by far, much more comfortable.

While this may seem obvious, adjustable straps are a must when you purchase a backpack. If they don’t have any, the weight in the bag will not be evenly distributed. Evenly distributed weight will save your back from problems and keep you from going into pain. Your backpack should also have a place where you can carry water. In an emergency situation, you never want to be holding onto your water bottle – you may forget it somewhere or it will be a pain to carry. A backpack that has a place to hold it will eliminate that source of stress for you.

You need a combination of big compartments and small ones, too. One big compartment will do you no good, whereas a bunch of small ones will just take up space. Know what you have and work with it. This will help keep all of your stuff organised.

Another aspect worth noting is that muted, neutral colours are best for backpacks because they keep you more camouflaged out in the wild. Also, look for bags that have water resistant materials. The worst thing that could happen is all of your belongings becoming wet because your backpack did not properly protect them. Our bag of choice has this protection.

A good backpack will save your life in an emergency. Invest in a good one, and you will thank yourself later.
